There is a slight cheat to this walk, by parking right up in the parking area on walna scar road you can knock a couple of miles off by missing out the boring part of the walk from the village of Coniston as you will only need to walk up to walna scar road anyway, and this bit is accessible by car.
So the carpark up on walna scar road is where we started this walk.
There is a path leading off to the right, that heads to the summit of the old man, ignore this and carry on along the road, you will come back down this path at the end of the walk.
Continue until you reach a right fork with steps leading up to a path moving around behind the Old Man.
Head towards Dow Crag, past the old quarry, over a ridge, then down to Goat’s Water
Follow the path from Goat’s Water up to the saddle of Goat’s Hause. As you come to the top of the path turn sharp right towards the summit. Looking left on the approach you will notice the zigzag path, which will is your return route.
Leave the summit, head down the zigzag path towards Low Water, a nice spot for a spot of lunch, turn right after Low Water and head towards Lake Coniston. Pass through the old mine workings and turn right and head all the way down the path to the car park were you started on Walna Scar Road.
