Levens Hall Deer park to Kendal circular

Distance: 11.51 miles 18.52Km

Total Ascent: 509ft

Difficulty: Easy

Time: About 5.5 hrs

There is parking for a few cars in a layby just across the junction north of Levens Bridge. Postcode we used LA80PD.

This walk is simply beautiful from start to finish, its predominately flat with just a few very gentle hills, so perfect for anyone who cant tackle the traditional fell walks of Cumbria. At 11.5 miles its quite a long walk but easy if you allow time for a gentle stroll, so although The walk took us 5.5 hours our actual moving time was around 4hrs because we took time for plenty of stops and the odd paddle in the glorious sunshine.

From the layby walk the 50yds back to Levens bridge, don’t take the 1st public footpath off the bridge, (this will be your way back) Instead head over the bridge to the south side and take the path through the stone wall and into the deer park.

The park is beautifully maintained, and full of wildlife up close and personal, so ideal for a bit of photography. Within a few minutes we had come across black fallow deer, rare breed bagot goats, rabbits, squirrels, swans, ducks, ducklings, lambs, young calves and buzzards.

The walk around the park is straight forward on clear gravel paths, after exiting the top of the park, cross over the bridge and take the trail leaving up to your right, this takes you onto the old disused Kendal canal and this is followed all the way into Kendal, again it is clear and obvious to navigate.

Once in Kendal, its just a case of crossing the footbridge over the River Kent and picking up the riverside path in a southerly direction,(keep an eye out for the impressive Holy Trinity Kendal parish church) eventually you have to leave the riverside path to cross the road bridge, but on the other side drop back down to the riverside path again. Follow the path and eventually you will cross the river to the east side at Hawes bridge, continue until the next road bridge crossing back to the west bank, turn left down the lane and under the massive bridge under the A590, climb back up to the lane and after a short distance turn at the finger post and back into the deer park and back to the start.
