The Day Everything Changed
18th May 2020 The Day our world changed forever!
After a minor DIY accident that required an x-ray it was found by accident that I had a cancerous tumour on one of my kidneys that was the size of a cauliflower, this was a total shock as I had no symptoms at all.
It was all very surreal at first as Covid 19 had just hit, the whole country was in lockdown and no one was allowed to be with me as the news was broke, my wife was sat at home expecting me back home with news of a cracked rib.
I was taken to a side room in the hospital, you know the one with the chair and the flowers that no one ever wants to go in, here I was told that the cancer had already spread from the kidney to my lungs, and the pleural sac, the bag containing the lungs and possibly my bones and in the most matter of fact way I was told the outlook was not good and I would require immediate surgery to remove the kidney.
I was I suppose numb, or shell shocked as my 1st response to this was, should I cancel my holiday next year then and save a few quid! I guess sometimes all you are left with is dark humour to protect yourself from the next storm of thoughts which I can only describe as blind brain panic where it is impossible to focus on a single thought for more than a Nano second.
I’m 47 years old, I have a family, I’m one of the good guys. Why me?
My immediate over riding thought was how can I tell my wife that all the plans, life and future we had planned were no longer going to happen!

Why?
“A wise man plants a tree whose shade he knows he will never sit under”.
This is the most important part and the driving force for us and one of the main reasons for the blog
We started fundraising for Cancer research Uk at the beginning of 2022 as a way of contributing to repaying the debt of life we owe to these amazing people. Not just for us and our family but for the millions who have been given the gift of time. Our contributions will only ever be a drop in the ocean of what is required but if we all do our bit we can beat this terrible disease.
We have got our little family team together to raise as much as we can this consists of what we call the usual suspects, that is myself, Steve, my wife Claire, her father John, sister Louise and her husband Mikey, we are the hikers of the bunch and are responsible for all the walks featured.
Our whole wider family has contributed and put in so much time and effort from skydiving to skipping to pretty mudder races, and the list goes on, I am so very proud and grateful for every ounce of fight they have all shown and we will not rest, and i will not rest until one day we can say we beat this.
